Founded in 2009, California Watch describes itself as “dedicated to independent investigative reporting.” It is a project of the Center for Investigative Reporting and is funded by a variety of foundations, including the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The Center is the nation’s oldest non-profit investigative new organization. In 2011, California Watch launched the California Watch Media Network, a collaborative project with some of California’s largest newspapers and TV stations in the state.
