The Michigan Messenger
Launched in 2007, the Michigan Messenger covers public affairs in Michigan. It is operated by the American Independent News Network, which “emphasizes the positive role of democratically elected government in securing the common good and social welfare.” The network is funded by a variety of individuals and foundations, including the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Open Society Foundations (Open Society Foundations is not currently funding the American Independent News Network). Michigan Messenger’s Eartha Jane Melzer was named the 2010 online journalist of the year for her environmental reporting by the Sierra Club of Michigan.
After this analysis was conducted, AINN changed how it organizes web content to better reflect the journalistic nature of stories that were published in its blog sections and thus not counted by PEJ. It has discontinued its blogs, and all of its content is now published in the main news channel.
