Launched in 2009, the Tennessee Watchdog’s objective is “monitoring the activities of state, local and federal government officials and agencies in Tennessee.” The site is a project of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research and the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity. The Tennessee Center is part of the State Policy Network, which works to improve the effectiveness of state-focused think tanks. It claims to be one of the first think tanks to fund non-profit journalism. The Franklin Center seeks to “investigate and inform the public about waste, fraud, abuse, ethical questions and safety concerns involving the use of taxpayer dollars,” and was launched with the help of the Sam Adams Alliance, a free-market think tank.
